Children and Dogs: Helping Kids to Learn Dog Training |
Children and dogs are often a great combination, though supervision is needed while the kids (and dogs) are quite young. When you can get the children involved in dog training, so much the better! I recently discovered a nice set of online dog training videos created by a young woman named Dove Cresswell. (My reviews of them are all on the menu, under "DVDs and Videos.") With each video I watched, I thought how good these would be to use in helping children train their dogs. These videos are composed of still photos, text, and Dove Cresswell's friendly voice. You can stop and restart them at any moment. You can go back to them as many times as you want, from different computers. The instructions are basic and clear. While younger children wouldn't be able to read all the text, I think (from my years of being a children's librarian!) that they would enjoy watching the programs with you or with their older siblings. Cresswell's voice over is not exactly what the words on the screen say, but they are close enough that you wouldn't have to read aloud.
Do be aware that Cresswell teaches the use of the choke chain, so if you don't want to use one, these might not be quite your thing. Also, older children who already know a fair amount about dogs and their training could have questions and interests that these programs don't address. But for getting your children and dogs off to a good start together, this video series might be just the ticket.
